Why architects are embracing 3D printing technology

White 3D printed lattice tower study model for an architecture project

Foam board and hand-cut card still earn their keep — but for pace, precision and repeatable detail, studios are shifting model-making to the printer. Here is what is driving the move.

Iterations keep pace with design

A massing study that consumed a workshop week now prints overnight, direct from the design file. Teams test three or four schemes in the time one used to take — and arrive at reviews holding options, not just renders.

Complex geometry, honestly represented

Twisted towers, lattice screens and stepped podiums are slow to craft by hand and easy to misread. Printed from the model itself, the physical piece matches the digital design exactly — no translation drift.

Presentation quality without the all-nighter

Uniform matte-white prints photograph beautifully and read clearly across the meeting table. Handing the job to a bureau like Formhaven means the model arrives finished and based — no 2 a.m. glue-gun sessions before the big review.

  • Send IFC, SKP or STL exports — we handle mesh repair and scaling.
  • Popular scales from 1:500 context models to 1:50 detail studies.
  • Colour-accent options for landscape, glazing and circulation highlights.
