From prototype to production: a complete guide

Team checking production-quality printed components

One good prototype validates the design; a disciplined process validates production. Here is how to cross over — from a single approved print to hundreds or thousands of matching parts with no surprises.

1. Freeze the design with a pilot

Run a small pilot batch in the final material and process first. Test it precisely the way customers will use it, then sign off a golden sample. Every later run is judged against that reference piece — no drift, no arguments.

2. Choose the right process for volume

FDM fits bigger, simpler parts at modest volumes; SLS nylon excels at intricate parts in the hundreds; SLA serves detail-driven runs. As a rule of thumb, printed production undercuts tooling up to several thousand units for suitable geometries.

3. Lock quality in writing

Settle which dimensions matter, which finish passes and how batches get sampled. A single-page quality plan — datums, tolerances, sampling rate — heads off almost every production dispute we have ever encountered.

4. Plan releases, not just orders

Book scheduled monthly or quarterly releases to level out machine time and unlock better tier pricing than scattered rush jobs. Share the forecast and unit cost falls at 50, 200 and 1,000+ quantities.
